Doing More and Doing Better
Human Needs and Business Management
This requirement begins from the bottom of the triangle with the basic human psychological needs for survival such as food, water, and sleep then rise to the top of the triangle that represents the achievement of satisfaction in life which refers to self-actualization.
Among the psychological needs and desires of self-actualization, there are three other necessary requirements, such as, security, ownership, and awards.
Small businesses, large corporations, and each manager must be aware of Maslow's theory and make decisions that meet the needs of some aspects of this if they want to develop loyal employees, competent, and satisfied.
There are many practical applications of Maslow's hierarchy of needs is done in business practice. Assuming that the basic needs of life met at work, here are some suggestions. Many of these suggestions are already in use in business life and the result is increased employee satisfaction and productivity. Interestingly, the application of this principle can be applied in multi-national companies or business operations simple with few employees.
Security needs include feeling secure in certain environments. Businesses should ensure their plans and policies that affect various circumstances that may occur, such as fire, flood, hurricane, or even accidents that may occur in the workplace. Employees must be briefed what to do in an emergency and management must show concern. Is the fire extinguisher, first aid equipment and emergency telephone numbers available? More attention as to ascertain whether the lighting in the parking area is sufficient so that employees who arrive early or return late will feel safe.
Needs ownership provides a sense of familiarity and making employees feel part of the team. Hats, shirts or accessories used to demonstrate the cohesiveness of the group as well as personal identity. Simple things like remembering birthdays by giving congratulations or greeting card instill a sense of presence and create an environment where individuals increased productivity because they feel appreciated.
Needs award gives a sense of achievement and satisfaction of employees. Model employee, a certificate of appreciation, a thank you publicly for a job finished well, is positive in the work environment.
This is just an example of the many ways in which managers can use the psychology of human behavior to provide a sense of presence for anyone who is involved in the workplace. Every manager or leader should be familiar with Maslow's hierarchy of needs and apply these elements in the workplace.
